9th International Dance Theatre Festival
OPEN STAGE
Mościce Arts Centre
9-27 October 2019
This is a festival OPEN to various forms of expression, dance techniques, sensitivities, and diverse audiences. This openness is meant as an encouragement to meet art which is as close to us as our bodies are. Emotions expressed with movement are a basic form of communication, common to everyone.
Festival Open Stage focuses mainly on the latest performances of modern dance, but also presents classical ballet and dance performances for children.
The motto of this year’s edition is “Fulfilment. Triumph and defeat.” The programme inspires reflection on our individual decisions and their consequences. Realising your personal dreams is a success, and a result of the choices you make or emotions you experience. However, sometimes the decisions leading to success ultimately lead to a tragedy. Why? Is it because of lack of good sense and perspective, or blinding emotions and pride?
These are just some of the questions which inspired the creators of this years’ performances. The festival programme includes almost twenty events, opening with “All That Jazz, Rock, Blues” featuring an international cast and choreographed by the excellent Israeli choreographer Itzik Galili. Other performances include two last years’ premieres from the Silesian Opera: “Scheherazade” and “Medea,” “Stalking Paradise” by the Lublin Dance Theatre, and “The Wooden Prince” and “The Miraculous Mandarin” by Kielce Dance Theatre. The closing performance is “Romeo and Juliet” by Kecskemét City Ballet from Hungary.
The festival presents professional performances with large casts, utilising not only professional dancers and choreographers, but also such forms of theatrical expression as elaborate costumes or advanced stage lighting. The resulting productions have a strong effect on the audiences, regardless of their age or experience. Experiencing the art of modern dance is accessible and simple for anyone who opens themselves to Art.
Apart from the performances and the exhibition, the Festival also features a competition for choreographers. The aim of the competition is to promote young, talented choreographers, and the competitors appreciate the opportunity to present their work on a professional stage. The jury includes people with rich artistic, choreographic, and teaching experience in various areas of dance: Zofia Rudnicka, Witold Jurewicz, Jacek Przybyłowicz and Robert Bonara.
